In what has become an annual holiday tradition, Works & Process at the Guggenheim presents a brand new special collaboration between the visual and the performing arts featuring 12 live performances of Sergei Prokofiev's charming children's classic, Peter & The Wolf. In a way this beloved story has never been presented before, renowned fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi will narrate, New York City Opera’s Music Director George Manahan will conduct the prestigious Juilliard Ensemble, 2008 Design Miami Designers of the year and legendary Brazilian design duo Campana Brothers will create a specially designed and Works & Process commissioned set and MacArthur Prize winning Jennifer Tipton’s lighting will bring the story to life.

The story brings 30 minutes of suspense...including a happy ending, and allows the young and young-at-heart to learn and remember the various instruments in the orchestra. After the performance, the audience will be able to view the artwork up-close.

This program is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Mexican artist Fernando Ortega is having his second British solo show at London’s Lisson Gallery. The exhibition, which features new works, explores the artist’s experimentation and fascination with the connection between the auditory and visual senses.

Through manipulation of both modern and traditional musical instruments, from a nineteenth century harp to a turntable, the artist is able to capture the unexpected results of changing the environment and circumstances surrounding these objects or occurrences.

By using audio and visual stimulus and recordings, Ortega gives the viewer a new interpretation of music and a playful approach to how the accidental divergence can create a new form of art.

This exhibition coincides with a major survey of Fernando Ortega’s work at MUCA, Mexico City accompanied by a catalogue.

Over Water Villas in Dellis Cay

Knowing your target audience is important when showcasing a new enterprise; and Dr. Cem Kinay, Chairman of the O Property Collection, was right on the mark when he co-hosted a VIP reception at the Vernissage of Art Basel in Miami, promoting the development of Dellis Cay, his exclusive island in the Turks and Caicos.

Called the "best kept secret in the Caribbean", this exclusive resort is being designed by seven, world-renowned architects, each providing their signature touch to a group of private villas, many of which will surely be snapped up by the well-healed crowd that filled the VIP lounge.

Co-hosting the event was Carl Ettensperger, one of the seven architects commissioned for this ambitious project. His contribution is outlined below. But please visit www.delliscay.com, to learn more about the project in general, as well as the visionary plans of the other six architects, which includes, Shigeru Ban, David Chipperfield, Carl Ettensperger, Zaha Hadid, Kengo Kuma, Piero Lissoni and Chad Oppenheim.

Inspired by his award winning work in Asia, Carl Ettensperger's villas at Dellis Cay bring a new level of refinement to their unique Caribbean context. To create them, the simple geometries of an Asian fishing village have been painstakingly re-imaged and perfectly designed into their surrounds: the villas appear to float free, a natural presence against a backdrop of boundless ocean.

Each villa is a setting for four pavilions, composed around an extensive courtyard deck. The pavilions each serve their specific purpose: a master bedroom with its capacious bathroom, a guest suite and a stunning living area. Generous openings in every pavilion consciously frame the surrounding ocean views. Divided between 5543 square feet of fully outdoor space and 2226 square feet of covered areas, the villas' overall dimensions are in excess of 7750 square feet.

Carl Ettensperger has been closely associated with some of the most prestigious global projects in the hospitality industry, working extensively in India and South East Asia.

Originally displayed in 1985 at the CAPC in Bordeaux, The Ten Commandments, are currently being exhibited for the first time in the United States. The series, which is one Haring’s most monumental both in scale and subject matter, required a unique setting. The twenty-five foot high arched canvases, which mimic the biblical image of the tablet form of the commandments finally found a home at Deitch Studios in Long Island City, New York.

Haring used his personal experiences and emotions regarding the religious subject matter for inspiration in creating a unique interpretation of each commandment. His abstraction and use of color creates a unifying aesthetic however is not trite and traditional. Due to it’s widely popular response and the magnitude of the exhibition, The Ten Commandments exhibition has been extended until February 15, 2009, although it was originally scheduled to close on December 21, 2008.

The Ten Commandments also coincides with the publication of the book, Keith Haring, edited by Jeffrey Deitch, Suzanne Geiss and Julia Gruen and published by Rizzoli.

Guarded Thoughts by Ron Arad

NEW YORK – On November 7, Friedm...

NEW YORK – On November 7, Friedman Benda at 515 West 26th Street, will unveil the new work of Ron Arad. This new body of work, the artist's most ambitious to date, propels Arad into previously unexplored sculptural dimension. In a departure both in scale and material sophistication, the artist uses his signature vocabulary of volumetric forms to unexpected and mesmerizing visual effect.

Ron Arad has commanded a unique and prolific role in the art, architectural, and design spheres for 30 years. Arad’s ever-evolving body of work reflects his ability to innovate with cutting-edge technology, while perfecting the ideals and techniques of hands-on craftsmanship. With this inspiration, he continues to provoke the proscribed limits of his materials by giving formal expression to his seemingly un-buildable ideas.

The artist continues to interpret and engineer the values of sculpture and seating. The new pieces shift, unravel, and tempt balance, posing challenging visual and material polemics. In Afterthought, a monumental mirror-polished aluminum quadrangle is torqued and cantilevered, while supporting a recessed seating cavity that morphs or disappears from varying standpoints. With melding reflective surfaces, the piece captures, holds and alters perceptions of light and movement in constant dynamic flow. With Southern Hemisphere, a massive, upright arc of patinated steel is weighted so that at rest it stands upright. Bearing a person's weight, the piece may twist and rock, rendering it both stable and precarious.

The scope of Arad’s career to date will be given full exposure in a major retrospective opening at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris on November 18th, 2008, subsequently traveling to The Museum of Modern Art in NY in June 2009 and The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2010.
